50k in 31 Days

Okay, so I'm a little obsessed with NaNoWriMo. As I've mentioned in other posts, it's the one time of the year where I seem to get things done. Having a goal and a deadline do wonders for my word count so a friend of mine came up with the idea to do NaNoWriMo throughout the year.

That's right ... a year of NaNoWriMo.

Through a quick Google search of NaNoWriMo spreadsheets, she found this awesome website that has done all the super hard spreadsheet stuff for you! A great big thanks to Svenja for the phenomenal effort. These new spreadsheets include a calendar for the entire year so you can pretty much so tailor your writing goals yourself and still feel like you have goal/deadline to meet.

So that's what I'm doing right now. I'm learning the ins and outs of the new spreadsheets and inputting my word count for today ... 3649

That's right, there are 25 minutes left in this east coast first day of the year and I have 3649 words already. The power of a deadline!

Forgetful Misadventures

I keep promising myself that I won't forget to blog. I keep promising myself that I'll find something to blog about. I keep promising myself that I won't listen to the blog advice that warns not to write about yourself because you're really not that interesting or the blog advice that warns not to give out too much writing advice because sometimes you're the only one who really knows what you're talking about.

Truth is, I don't have an exciting life and for I don't know how long now, I've really done very little writing. Between being a full-time student, a wife, and a mother, I really have little time for the other things in my life that used to really make me, me, like; writing, photography, going out to my local Borders and ordering a hazelnut latte while I hammer away at the keyboard getting lost in the various coffee and new book smells (okay, that one really isn't my fault since Borders decided to go out of business). The point is, I'm not feeling much like a writer these days and it's gone on much longer than I care to admit.

There was a point in time where I could easily come up with 100,000 words in a matter of just three or four months. There was a time when I was writing about three or four novels a year as well as a short story for NaNoWriMo. The ideas flowed easily. I didn't have to outline or put too much extra effort into my work. It just flowed, organically, as if the words already existed and I was just the instrument through which they would appear on screen. Now, I can barely open a Word document without feeling the creative juices turning off, like a light switch.

Sometimes, I'll be thinking about my characters and stories all day long. I'll have these scenes playing out in my head and I'll be thinking about the best way to weave all these plot points together. I'll tell myself, "as soon as I get home, I'm writing. No excuses," but as soon as I get situated, my brain goes blank. Everything I had been thinking suddenly seems like it's on the other side of a link I'm missing. I know what people say. The best way to get through writer's block is to write. Believe me, I've tried. I haven't touched my journal in over a year. I used to write in it every other day or so. I have three incomplete stories waiting for attention, all three of which I started as NaNoWriMo or CampNaNoWriMo projects.

Whatever this is, it feels debilitating. I look at my document and I want to write. I have the story in my brain somewhere, but it's obviously being held hostage by something I can't even negotiate with it because it refuses to answer the phone. I feel guilty when I avoid writing. I feel guilty when I open a document and try to write but can't. It's been far too long. I used to never start another story before I finished one. I would keep notes for any ideas that popped into my head so I could come back to them later, but I always had to see a project through to fruition before I began another and now I have nothing to show for the 150,000 or so words that the past few NaNoWriMos have given me because I can't finish the stories.

Funny enough, they all seem to begin to lag right about the same place ... right after the 200 page mark. For instance, the third installment of Tallulah and Gennadi's story is only a chapter or two from being complete. All the ends have been tied together except for forgiveness. That's the last of what needs to be said and I can't. With Fiona and Declan, I know the problem is a little more complicated than that. I have about 100 pages left to go and no idea how to get my story from where it is to where I planned for it to be and that might be because Declan was never supposed to be the hero. He was supposed to be a secondary character, a romantic red herring, but he proved to have a little more say over the matter than I did. And with my current WIP, Effie and Foster, I know exactly how the story ends and the events that lead us there, but I can't come up with the words on paper. It's maddening.

And because I have so much trouble writing, something I love so very much, I've avoided the blog. I feel ashamed that I can't write. Something you love so much shouldn't be this difficult, should it? That's what I keep telling myself. I diverted my attention by learning the gist of Twitter. I might be the last holdout to give into the Twittersphere. But that was just a diversion. If I could say it was about connecting with other authors, I could convince myself it was a step in the right direction.

So, if you've hung around and read through my entire sob story, perhaps you have a woeful tale of writer's block to share with me. Some advice? Some encouragement? Something to make me giggle and distract me from my problem once again? At this point, anything is welcome.

Long Lost Blogger

Hello! It's been quite a while since I've posted. It seems like it's fairly easy to forget blogging when real life gets busy. I am trying to convince myself to create a schedule for my writing, including blogging, because it's important to me and I seem to have way too much going on to stick with it otherwise. I just finished my first semester of college and am hoping that after I complete the prerequisites, I get accepted into the nursing program. When I'm not buried in study materials or trekking around campus, I have been exploring other creative outlets like candle making, scrap booking, and Twitter-izing. Okay, so maybe Twitter isn't exactly the creative exploration I think it is, but considering how emphatically opposed to it I was, it feels like a creative outlet for me. I also have been reading about how great of a tool it can be for writers which is why I decided to give it a try. I'm currently working on a new WIP that is tentatively titled When the Weatherman Says Rain. It's my comfortable genre of chick-lit and so far I'm very happy with the progress. I had the idea a long time ago, inspired by the week of Paris shows on the Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson and only just now have gotten around to really getting serious about the idea. I'm participating in Camp NaNoWriMo with this manuscript so I'm making much more progress than I would had I decided to write at my leisure. Excited to be back! Hope you all are doing well and are staying busy!

NaNoWriMo Plans?

Well, it's that time of the year again where writers scramble for 50,000 words worth of plot, characters, setting and another pot of coffee. Fifty thousand words in thirty days. When you first start NaNoWriMo, how impossible does the task feel?

Last year, I didn't start until about the second week in November so this year I'm doing a little more planning and plotting than before. I know my characters inside and out because they're the same NaNoWriMo characters I've written for the past two years. I'm fairly certain my water dwelling creatures will sprout legs and live amongst us land-faring creatures this year.

I sat down and started brainstorming chapters and how long each chapter should be. I started some research, although I admit I don't put as much research into NaNo as I do my other work.

Anyway, the point of this post is to find out how you prepare for NaNo? Do you have everything planned out way in advance? Do you fly by the seat of your pants? Is your NaNo project something you'd be proud for people to read or is it something you file away and forget about until next NaNo? Is it a catalyst for a project you plan to work on even after NaNo ends?

Flair

Made two new buttons for my blog today, both for Zarya. You can check them out at the end of the blog. Zarya is the mermaid character that I've been working with for the past two (and soon to be three) NaNoWriMo years. I am quite sure there are more buttons to be made for characters I haven't introduced to the blog yet but just haven't had the chance to check through my work.

I am almost finished with the Penalty Killer chapter I am working on! Just another 500 or so words. I am just trying to figure out how I want it to end.

It is noon here already and all I've done is straighten the house a bit, eat breakfast and lunch, and write. So, I'm going to get the clothes out of the dryer, get ready to go to the gym, and hopefully get some more writing in before my evening yoga class.

Wish me luck! I've never attempted yoga before so this should be quite the experience.

Show Me Yours Blogfest

Just stumbled onto this blogfest. Check it out HERE. And stop by HERE to show fellow blogfester, Misha, some love.

So if I'm understanding this blogfest correctly, we simply post 500 words of our NaNoWriMo work. Simple enough.

Some background information:

Zarya is a mermaid and Queen of the Oceans
Arion is a merman and King of the Oceans
Ronan is a selkie (a seal with the power to shed his skin and become human and totally seductive)
Abellona is a rogue mermaid with a desire for revenge on Zarya and the gods

This is a fantasy genre short story ... or so I am guessing as it is far beyond my normal genre of writing.

Once Upon an Ocean Nightmare (Chapter 17)

“Kiss me,” I said breathlessly. I wanted so much more than just a mere kiss, but I would settle for just a kiss. His fingertips played against my back, traveling down my spine to the place where my hips were still sheathed in scales. His mouth covered mine, pressing against my lips, and I could taste the salt that barely flavored his skin. It was beautiful, and I felt my body draw into him, my hands against his chest as he pulled me tighter against him. He took a few half steps backwards and I felt my toes graze over that warm selkie skin.

“Aye, my queen, I should resist,” he murmured, but there was no hesitation in his touch. I ran my fingertips over his chest. I was hungry for him.

“Not this time. You should kiss me, touch me, need me,” I whispered back. I felt him stumble on the rocks and he slid down until he was seated on the floor. I crawled over him, kissing at his bare flesh, letting my tongue trail over the curve of his jaw.

“Are you sure you are not a selkie? You have fully and completely seduced me, my queen, my love,” he said. I could almost see his eyes and the selkie skin was still so close to my toes. It was so warm, so inviting.

I sat up, gently putting weight on the hand that hovered over his chest so he would not sit up.

“I love you so much. That’s why I must do this. I must protect you because you will risk too much to protect me,” I whispered, feeling the tears start to pour again. They lit my cheeks, probably enough for Ronan to see my eyes for an instant. I pulled back, grabbed his selkie skin, and pressed against the wall, focusing all my magic on melting outwards. I could hear him shouting, scrambling to grab me, but he was too late.

My heart was pounding, blood rushing through my body as my fin returned. The selkie skin was still so warm. I waited, hovering there in front of the rock as if I expected one of the other selkies to find me and attack, for fear I’d just done the same to Ronan, but Arion and the selkies were busy making sure the waters were safe for travel. I called for more magic, put my hands on the rock as the selkie skin slid over my shoulder, and watched as the cavern Ronan was locked in moved effortlessly, another league lower in the ocean. When it was still again, I marked it with an almost invisible magic. It would help me find him when this was over. When we reached Atlantis, I would tell the selkies how to find him, just in case I didn’t make it out of battle alive.

“I am sorry, my love. I must protect you,” I whispered, pressing the selkie skin against the rock. Magic flowed from my fingertips and watched as rock surrounded the selkie skin.

NaNoWriMo is Complete!!

I completed NaNoWriMo a few days ago if you consider reaching the 50,000 word goal finished, but I actually finished my story completely last night with 52,842. It is not a fabulously put together short story/novella, but it could be a diamond in the rough just as the first one was last year during NaNoWriMo. I think with some tweaking, editing and a little more research, it could be turned into something great and it is the fantasy genre, which I never write in except my two attempts at NaNoWriMo.

I'm so excited though! I did it, even when I thought I couldn't and wouldn't and even though I was feeling less than motivated with my writing for the past several months!

NaNoWriMo Complete!!

For the second year in a row, I have completed NaNoWriMo!

I finished last night around 11pm with 50,279 words. I am not finished with the story. It will take about 1200 more words, but I will finish that tomorrow. I already have a general idea for the ending so it won't be too hard to finish even before the 30th, even though I've already reached the goal.

I'm so excited because I truly did not believe I would complete NaNoWriMo this time, but I am so happy that I did! I also am so excited to start work on Penalty Killer again!

NaNoWriMo Update

Last night I finished a chapter before I went to bed and managed to get just over 41,100 words. I'm over the suggested cumulative word count by about a day or so. I have plans to start working on Thanksgiving day prep tonight so I am going to try to get another chapter hammered out but first I have to brainstorm what happens next. I have a general idea of where the story goes, but no fine tuned plan on how to get there, so that is what is holding me back at this moment.

NaNoWriMo Update

I have been working on NaNoWriMo since about 9:30pm, although not exclusively. However, I'm so thrilled with my production! I wrote two complete chapters today!

For some reason, my NaNoWriMo stats have not updated to include 11-22-10 suggested word counts but I will post 11-21-10.

Today's word count: 38,532
Suggested count: 35,000

If I'm not too exhausted and my brain isn't too fried to do the math, I am thinking that 11-22-10's suggested count would be 36,167. So, I am a day or two ahead of the suggested cumulative total. Perhaps I can finish before Thanksgiving. I don't know how much writing I'll get done tomorrow though because Joe has Mondays off for the next few weeks, which puts a little dent in my normal schedule.

I will keep you updated though! I am determined to finish this story before November 30th!

NaNoWriMo Update For Yesterday

I forgot to blog about my NaNoWriMo update yesterday. I hadn't sat down to write on Friday so I really needed to get some writing done yesterday. I finished a chapter. I don't remember what the suggested word count was, but I know I went over it by a few hundred words. I finished last night with 33,775 and for today I think I need to be at 35,000. I will try to sit down and write at some point, maybe after the game.

11.18.10 NaNoWriMo

Started out with a few hundred less words to write to get to my daily average, so that was great. I finished chapter thirteen and have 78 pages written (only 1.5 spacing)

You know the chapters I said I would brainstorm last night? Yeah, didn't happen. So Tonight after dinner and some evening chores, I will have to buckle down and get some chapters brainstormed so that I can continue writing at this pace. Once again, over my suggested cumulative total so I'm thrilled about that. Glad to be beyond the halfway point. For a while, I wasn't sure I'd even participate in NaNoWriMo this year and now I feel like it's definitely within the realm of possibility ... as long as I don't lose any steam during the last half of the month.

My unofficial goal is to be finished with the story by the 25th, but I will be happy to finish by the 30th.

Today's Count: 31,366
Suggested Count: 30,000

NaNoWriMo 11.17.10

Didn't start writing today until about 10:00pm. But I at least had a plan for the second half of the chapter, which made it easy to meet my daily goal. I am going to brainstorm a couple more chapters and head to bed. I think I may do some early writing tomorrow, just depends on how quickly I get my housework done.I already have the next chapter outlined, but I will definitely need some ideas already strewn together to keep up my progress.

Today's Total: 28,884
Suggested Total: 28,334

Merpire or Vampaid

So I was just working on Once Upon an Ocean Nightmare, which is the second installment of Zarya, Arion, and Ronan. Well, I was writing a scene that takes place during the day on the surface of the water and I realized, I think my merpeople have mingled with vampires over the course of their evolution.

Why did I so suddenly come to this conclusion? Well, I offer for your consideration, what I'm listing as evidence.

Evidence A

Merpeople need the moon to draw energy. The moonlight energizes them and strengthens their magic. Now, they do not need to bask under the moon every night, unless they are a.) a newborn, b.) just given birth within the last thirty days, and last but not least, c.) waiting for their love to return from a long journey.

Evidence B

Merpeople cannot handle the sunlight. Infant merchildren cannot withstand the sun at all. It drains the energy they gathered during basking so they must be under the surface of the water before the sunrise. Young mermaids cannot see a sunrise until they are married. Their male counterparts can be unaffected by the sunrise before marriage, but it also drains energy and magic from their bodies at a quicker rate than if they had just gone back into the ocean at sunrise. Sunlight is also not good for mermaids who have given birth within the last 30 days. Their bodies are weak and susceptible to massive energy and magic drain from the sun.

Evidence C

Ronan isn't a merperson. He's a selkie, which is a seal who can change into human form. Anyways, selkie blood is what gives the rogue merpeople their excessive energy and ability to heal so quickly. When Zarya is weakened from travel and childbirth and impending war, Ronan offers enough of his blood to her to help heal her and replenish her energy.

So, I wrote the first edition, Once Upon an Ocean Lullaby, last year at NaNoWriMo and I never noticed until now that a lot of my merpeople characteristics are very vampire.

I guess the question now is should they be "merpires" or "vampaids"? LOL

NaNoWriMo 11.16.10

Today is the 16th and I had meant to post a blogcast yesterday but blogger was being extra super slow so I nixed the idea. I'll consider remaking a video in a couple days and posting it.

Worked on NaNoWriMo today. I am barely above the suggested cumulative count for the day, which makes me feel great.

Today's Count: 26,703
Suggested Count: 26,667

Monday, November 15, 2010

NaNoWriMo Update

23,988 words! It is the first time all month that I have been over the suggested daily word count. Now I feel like it is totally within my grasp. I just need to brainstorm some plot points. I have done absolutely NO brainstorming so far and I feel like that is probably what is holding me back.

NaNoWriMo Update

I am working on my Zarya story again today after writing 5000+ words last night. My brain was fried so I went to bed and I'm determined to get on track today.

Starting Count: 19,354
Goal Total: 3,980

NaNoWriMo

I'm listening to the Pens game right now and going to try to work on NaNoWriMo while listening to the third period. I really need to get motivated. I may be up for a while tonight trying to get caught up. I need another 7230 to be on track to finishing on time.

Wish me luck!!
